only when someone discover such acts that pple get alarm. most of the time when we sign up things, there's so many clauses, who knows we just give our details out like that. perhaps we should look at what data that the companies required during sign up stage.

maybe govt is trying to check for terrorist-related works? if it's for the better good, how should we view this then?

In this case, they have stated it is illegal, so if the govt needs it for terrorist-related matters, then it is up to them to make changes to the legislation and justify.

But this type of thing can also be often misused unless there are proper checks. For example, could they also be using it for political gains such as tracking their political rivals? I think it is the lack of transparency that people are worried about, which is often?ÿbroadly swept under the "we are protecting the people" umbrella.

So even if it is legal to collect and analyse data for national security, there must be independent checks to make sure it is not abused. Otherwise, it will always be a "you-say-I-say" situation about how and why the data is being collected and used.

British security agencies have secretly and unlawfully collected massive volumes of confidential personal data, including financial information, on citizens for more than a decade, senior judges have ruled.

Will this happen in Singapore?
